 Justin Tolley
Vocals, Bass Guitar
His earliest memories of music were listening to his Dad play the Hammond organ complete with the rotating "Leslie" cabinet and going through his record collections and playing them on the home stereo. His formal study in music started at the age of 9 when he began taking piano & organ lessons. He also picked up the trombone, at which he excelled and was asked to sit in with the high school marching and jazz bands.
Justin began playing bass at the age of 17. In high school, he was given a used, Fender Jazz Bass imitation which he adapted to very quickly. "Although the bass I had was in bad shape, it would stay in tune, allowing me to progress...." While learning the basics of bass by rock and roll songs, Justin was occasionally asked to sit in with his Dad's motown band. He enjoyed the chance to perform with his Dad, as well as the thrill of playing in a professional setting.
After H.S., Justin completed a 4yr tour as a paratrooper at Ft. Bragg, NC. "I remember getting into classic rock bands like Cream, Iron Butterfly, Yes and Grand Funk Railroad... at the same time there was the influx of the grunge era so I was really into bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots." After his Army tour, Justin returned to Virginia searching for his next move. In 1997 he joined a band called 'RedLightGo" - an original and cover rock band based in Lexington. Along with playing a few bars, he also played the frat party scene in Lexington and Charlottesville. "Good Times!"
In 1999, Justin moved to Roanoke, where he looked forward to digging in to the local music scene. From the 'Wits End' to 'The Club' as well as 'The Green Dolphin' open mic and Blues Jam, Justin has played with numerous area musicians and bands. In 2001 he auditioned for the Worx Band and played until the Spring of 2005 when he was asked to fill in with 'Drivn' for scheduled road shows. Justin played various road shows including gigs in St. Louis, MO., Kansas City, MO. at the Ameristar Casinos there, as well as the "World Famous Tiki Bar" in the Florida Keys. After the Drivn hiatus, the Worx asked him back on the bass, to which he readily accepted. "My favorite thing about playing in the Worx band is having the opportunity to play many different styles of music with seasoned players. It's been great!" justin@theworxband.com
